Distribution Planning and Options

Program

Retirement distributions are not just taking money out of an account. The timing, source, and method of distribution can materially affect the retirement account owner’s income taxes, penalty exposure, future required withdrawals, and long-term after-tax wealth. Here are some questions to consider: Should I withdraw now or later? Roll funds over or keep them in the retirement account or plan? Convert to Roth?

Key Takeaways:

  • Know what is in the account – how much is pretax and how much is after -tax basis
  • Do not overlook RMD mechanics and consider donating RMD directly to charity (Qualified Charitable Distribution)
  • Check penalty exceptions before taking early distribution
  • Roth conversion
